domenico corvi    greek mythology    this myth has always interested me b/c psyche is the active partner    she spies on eros    and then she's one to undertake dangerous tasks to get him back including going to the underworld    the other players are largely women as well    psyche's sisters and venus and persephone all have active roles and further the story    that's just not something you see in mythology often enough

I have a special treat for you all, as I have just become the proud owner of Cupid and Psyche as illustrated by the inimitable Errol Le Cain. The book is out of print and ludicrously expensive to buy second hand, so I’ll be treating you to a few choice scans of some of Le Cain’s wonderful illustrations. Stay tuned!

The Doom Fulfilled Edward Burne Jones
Andromeda is a princess from Greek mythology who, as divine punishment for her mother’s bragging, the Boast of Cassiopeia, was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster. She was saved from death by Perseus, her future husband. Her name is the Latinized form of the Greek Ἀνδρομέδη (Andromédē). The traditional etymology of the name is “she who has bravery in her mind” from ἀνήρ, ἀνδρός (anēr, andrós) “man” as in “soldier”, and similarly ἀνδρεία (“bravery”) combined with μήδομαι (mēdomai) “to think, to be mindful of.” Alternatively it could mean “she who leads”
